Earl Identity

A visual identity inspired by the birth of the first ‘Earl’ as told in an ancient Eddic poem called ‘Rígsþula’ (Lay of Ríg).

According to legend, a Norse god named Ríg (also known as Odin, ruler of the nine realms) wanders through the worlds and fathers the ancestors of the three classes of human beings. ‘Earl’ is one of the sons of Ríg, and the ancestor of the highest class in Viking culture, the warrior class.

The custom typeface is derived from a grid system of nine intersecting points depicting Rig’s journey as he wonders the nine realms.
